The IIEP Model for Research on Measurement

Abstract

Citizens of Illinois may rightfully wonder how well K–12 mathematics students have developed the abilities to estimate and to measure. Considering (1) that the U.S. Department of Commerce is coordinating the voluntary changeover from conventional systems of measurement to that of the SI metric system and (2) that the Illinois State Board of Education directed that the SI metric system be the major system of measurement taught by 1980, what is the status of students' measurement skills and knowledge using either metric or conventional measuring systems? The present study was designed to address these and related questions and to provide information concerning the present measurement achievement limits of Illinois youth.
