An "I do and I understand*" Math Activity: Work Problems (as seen through the eyes of a student)

Abstract


I have always had difficulty, like most students, understanding story problems. However, work problems were a breeze because of the math activity used in my algebra class. As I entered the room, two geometric figures, outlined in masking tape, were on the chalkboard along with a formula. After the bell, several students were handed stop watches which they practiced starting and stopping a few times. A student, called Worker 1, was selected to do the work which was chalking-in the geometric figures.
