A Pattern Approach for Solving Simple Linear Equations

James P. Herrington

Instructing students in the procedures to be used for solving simple linear equations can often be a difficult task. Many beginning algebra students have not fully developed the ability to think abstractly. This deficiency leads to an inability to perform the sequential steps in the equation solving process. Presenting a concrete, step-by-step pattern approach that the students can see and with which they can work should result in improved student performance. The following pattern approach to equation solving has been quite successful for me in basic algebra classes.
