Problem Solving? What's Your Strategy?

Since there is so much agreement among mathematics educators that problem solving skills should be stressed at all grade levels, (see An Agenda For Action: Recommendations for School Mathematics of The 1980's published by the NCTM), all of us should be on the look-out for realistic situations from which appropriate word problems can be identified. Ideally, these situations should be close to our pupils' own experiences, should be somewhat interesting to the children and should lend themselves to various problem solving strategies in the search for the answers.
